Sonata for Solo Cello by Zoltán Kodály is perhaps the most significant composition for solo cello since Johann Sebastian Bach. It serves as a benchmark for even the greatest virtuosos, challenging them with its unique demands. The cello's sound is particularly rich due to tuning the two lowest strings a half step lower than usual. The intensity of the work was unprecedented in its composition year of 1915, and to this day, it's challenging to find anything that surpasses it.
Mari Sainio, based in Lauttasaari, has produced some of her best compositions in London, including this delightful single-movement quintet. Franz Schubert's quintet has been selected as the most popular chamber music piece in many audience polls. The joy of playing it, the brightness of a summer day it exudes, and the freshness of its melodies are qualities that few, if any, have captured as Schubert did.
