Chamber music is sometimes called “room music,” as it was often intended for performance in homes. However, these two works are clearly meant for grand concert halls. The violin sonata, composed for the French virtuoso Rodolphe Kreutzer, resembles a concerto where a brilliant pianist takes on the orchestra’s role. In the piano quintet, the four strings and grand piano, at times, reach the substantial sound of a full orchestra.
