2. Concert: Fear, Passion, and Homesickness

Thu, June 13th at 18.30

Lauttasaari Church

  • Franz Schubert (1797–1828): Quartettsatz (1820)

  • Leoš Janáček (1854–1928): String Quartet I “Kreutzer Sonata” (1923)

  • Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904): String Quartet No. 12 Op.96 ‘American’ (1893)

Wihan Quartet

The unfinished Quartet movement by Franz Schubert is electrifying with its restless tremolos at the beginning, which could depict horror, fear, or a getaway. Janáček's Kreutzer Sonata masterfully reflects the passionate emotions of Tolstoy's novel of the same name. While in the United States, Antonín Dvořák visited Czech immigrants in Spillville, Iowa. There he was struck by intense homesickness, and fervent creativity gave birth to a magnificent Quartet in just a few days.
