The instrument "arpeggione," a hybrid of cello and guitar built in Vienna in 1823, did not secure a lasting place in music history. However, the sonata composed for it by Franz Schubert in 1824 is likely to remain forever popular among violists and virtuoso cellists. C minor was Ludwig van Beethoven's favorite key in many of his powerful works, and it is evident at times even in this early Quartet. The intensity only grows towards the end of the concert, as Janáček, with musical fervor, depicts his passionate letters to his muse, Kamila Stösslová, nearly 40 years his junior.
