Aulis Sallinen's successful career as a composer has spanned half a century. He is particularly known for his operas, which are a crucial part of Finnish opera art from the 1970s and 1980s. Sallinen's repertoire also includes a significant amount of chamber music, orchestral works, concertos, and eight symphonies.

One of Aulis Sallinen's most well-known works is his opera Ratsumies (The Horseman, 1975), based on F. E. Sillanpää's novel of the same name. The opera gained significant international attention and solidified Sallinen's position as a respected composer. Throughout his career, Sallinen has received numerous awards and recognitions. In addition to composing, he has been a significant figure in Finnish music culture, teaching at the Sibelius Academy and serving as the managing director of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
